AQUAPONICS
Traning for Technology and Scince Program

The DISCOVERY LX AQUAPONIC SYSTEM MODEL D9000 will add a new dimension to all technology education labs as well as science and agriculture programs. This course is a combination of Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (growing plants without soil) and is designed to provide the student with an awareness and appreciation of the delicate balance between plant and fish life and the importance of protecting and controlling our environment. The course format will guide the student through a hands-on program that will allow the student to experience a working knowledge of an Aquaponic system. Unlike other technologies that deal with inanimate devices, the student will be working with living organisms and be able to observe, control, and protect nature's eco-cycle in the classroom. The system starts with a fish tank and fish. The fish are fed, and in turn, the fish fertilize the water, which increases the ammonia level in the water. The fish tank water is pumped into and over a bio-filter that has multiple bio-cubes, which simulate a river rock bed. The bio-filter requires both oxygen and ammonia to grow a natural bacterium that changes the ammonia to a nitrite and then to nitrate. The nitrate (a usable form of nitrogen) is used by the plants. From the bio-filter the water passes over the plants roots where much of the nitrogen and other nutrients are removed by the plants, thus treating the water for return to the fish. The system includes a complete 10-day curriculum, water testing kits, seed germination kit, and videotapes.
